Throughout my time of going to shows and seeing bands I have seen many iconic and incredibly talented guitarists, I am really happy to have added Pete Townshend to that list. I’ve always wanted to see the infamous windmill live, and Pete delivered… about 100 times. After missing the Who in Nashville during it’s initial leg of the tour, I got to see them in Louisville on a rescheduled date due to Roger Daltry getting meningitis. Thankfully he made a full recovery, and even commented on it during the show thanking the fans for their support during that time. Even though there are only two remaining members of the band, it still felt as incredible as footage I have seen from their past.
From the opening of the show with “Who Are You” to closing with “Won’t Get Fooled Again” I was totally in love with the show. Roger still has an incredible voice, and can still hit that infamous huge scream that we all know from the CSI intro. Pete took time in between songs to tell some of his memories and thoughts about the past and his personal connection to some of the songs. He was hilarious and the banter back and forth between he and Roger shows they haven’t lost that brotherly connection that they started with 50 years ago. Even though Keith Moon wasn’t manning the drums, Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey, was an incredible replacement bringing Moon’s style and drum rolls to life for us. Also joining the full band is Pete’s brother Simon.
The night truly showed the reason why The Who are so iconic and have been for the past 50 years. The songs have never gotten old, or died out through the years. Most of them are still being used in commercials and other places in entertainment, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. So here’s to the last 50 years of the Who, and to the next 50 years and more for their music.
